100% Organic Cotton Fabrics
For home sewers, businesses, retailers, and anyone who gives a scrap!
October was breast cancer awareness month. I know I am a few days late but wanted to pass on this information (recently posted on Grist) about preventing breast cancer. To me, prevention makes the most sense. If there are known causes, by all means let's stop our exposure to those things! Ask Umbra's post identifies these things to avoid:
GIVEAWAY!!!! In honor of this important topic, I am giving away of 2 yards of solid pastel pink organic sateen OR 2 yards of Pink Moon 2nds (also organic cotton sateen) to 2 people who post on this entry about some way they are helping prevent breast cancer in their own lives or the lives of others. They will be selected at random one week from today. I would love a cure, but in the meantime let's stop the nonsense and avoid these known causes.

Each week the Organic Trade Association runs a contest with different members donating prizes. This week, the theme is "Babies" and Harmony Art is donating 2 yards of Alphabet Soup interlock plus one yard of apricot or lime interlock (winner's choice). To enter the contest, sign-up for their weekly newsletter, follow the instructions in the clues and you just might win!
If you sign up too late for Tuesday's newsletter, you can email Jennifer and she will send you the newsletter so that you can get the clues. NOTE: you must sign up to get the newsletter sent to you with the clues. While I am on the subject of the Organic Trade Association, here's a link to their facebook fan page and twitter account. Good luck! This picture was taken by one of my favorite artists/activists, Chris Jordan. It was not staged or altered in any way. You can see more of his pictures from the gyre on his web site. Big thanks to Laura of Meadowsweet Organics for emailing me this link.
The video for the week is another Chris Jordan moment from TED. It's 11 minutes long and, in my opinion, well worth the time. Chris is as eloquent with his words as he is with his photos. Credit and thanks for the video link goes to The Green Bag Lady, who by the way, is currently running another bag giveaway. (Deadline is midnight Wednesday so better get over there quick and get your free bag.) Or so they say. This picture shows one yard of our Whispering Grass 110" wide organic cotton sateen with a 45" wide (traditional quilting width) fabric in black laid on top.
I am hoping this visual helps people wrap their heads around just how much more fabric you get per yard of our wide width fabrics. The price on first glance may seem high, but once you realize what you get for your money, the price difference makes much more sense. The first person to "do the math" and post how to compare 45" width pricing to our 110" wide pricing wins a free yard of our Whispering Grass (aqua or black/white) wide width sateen. Tomorrow night (Sept. 14th) at 7:00pm I will be speaking to a quilt group in Santa Rosa, CA. If you are in the area and would like to join the festivities - please feel free to contact me and I will provide you with the details. (NOTE: rumor has it attendees will go home with free fat quarters!)
Big thanks to Sue Roberts for arranging the gathering. Hope to see you there! Last week The Green Bag Lady, Misses Stitches and I gave away close to 100 fabric bags in front of the two grocery stores in Gualala. As you can see, we had fun! The house is quiet after the visit... sniff sniff... but the bags (and memories) live on.
Yesterday as I drove across the bridge into the town of Gualala a man was walking the other way carrying a Green Bag Lady bag! I have seen this man walking many times before with a plastic bag. It was fabulous feeling to see the bag in action. THANKS Green Bag Lady! On July 5th the Green Bag Lady and her family arrived from Nashville for two weeks of Summer Art Camp at the Gualala Art Center. One afternoon last week, after art camp, the 11 year old decided to make a Harmony Art commercial and this is what she came up with with absolutely NO help. I can only imagine what she will be creating when she's 15! Thanks M (and E)!
This coming Wednesday, July 14th, we will be hosting two Green Bag Lady bag giveaways in Gualala. If you live in the area, stop by the Gualala Supermarket at 4pm and the Surf Super at 5pm to get your very own FREE Green Bag Lady bag. The only catch is you have to promise to use it rather than paper or plastic. Also, if you live in the area, our local radio station: KTDE 100.5 FM will be re-airing an interview with Teresa and me about The Green Bag Lady project this Wednesday at 5pm. I will try to get my hands on a recording and post it on this blog, if I can. Stay tuned. We are having a great summer and hope you are too! As many of you know, I am a big fan and supporter of The Green Bag Lady and her mission to help rid the world of plastic bags. If you aren't yet a proud owner of a Green Bag Lady Bag, now is your chance. She is running a Take One Make One Giveaway in conjunction with Sew Mama Sew. The deadline is May 20th at midnight so don't delay. Good luck and Happy Sewing!
Believe it or not, for the first time ever, Monsanto has admitted that pests have developed a resistance to their Bt (genetically modified) Cotton. Skeptics of GMO seeds have been speaking of this risk for years but this is the first time the makers of GMO seeds have admitted such a problem is actually happening in fields. Of course, their solution is to switch to their 2nd generation of Bt seeds. You can read the full article in The Hindu.
