So I think we can all agree that 2020 was not the best year ever.  I am feeling cautiously optimistic that 2021 will be a more health-full and enjoyable one.

For 21 years now I have welcomed in the new year with a gratitude challenge.  Are you up for the challenge?  I guarantee that if you participate YOU will have a new attitude of gratitude to greet the new year.

Be the first person to send me a list of 2,021 thoughtful things you are thankful for and win a FREE roll of organic cotton fabric.  YES, AN ENTIRE ROLL of one of these fabrics: Silent Stumps, Graceland, Whispering Grass Orchid, Let it Grow Brown/Aqua, or Stumps Speak. You pick and  . . . . although the entire roll (approx. 50 yards) is FREE (approx. value $800) the winner is responsible for the shipping (UPS ground) charges.  You are only eligible to win this giveaway one time.

What are YOU grateful for? Maybe you want to take this opportunity to start a new business and this free fabric will make that dream a reality?  Or maybe you just want to make your entire family identical print pajamas?  What you do with the fabric is 100% up to you

I look in hope or fear;
But, grateful, take the good I find,
The best of now and here.

For years we have been doing our annual gratitude challenge which offers a FULL ROLL of limited release Harmony Art organic fabric to the first person to submit their gratitude list. (FULL DETAILS HERE) It took until November of 2010 for the first winner (Tania) to come forward. It took until March of 2012 for our next winner (Terri) to emerge. This year in serious record time Mary & friends completed the list and selected Silent Stumps Sateen for their roll (pictured above).

For the last few nights I have read 100 items each night after dinner. What fun. Thank you Mary. I hope you enjoy the fabric!

If you are still working on your list, don't stop! There is a good chance we will be offering the challenge again next year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR + a challenge

Since December 1999, we (husband and I) have been marking every new year with a gratitude list.  Our challenge is to create a list of things we are grateful for that equals the year we are entering.  The list must be completed by midnight on Dec. 31st.  So, this year we came up with 2,013 things we are thankful for.

Over the years, the challenge has morphed and changed.  It went from a one night marathon event to a list we begin on Thanksgiving each year.  Also, my dear friend Mary Sue has become a VERY important contributor to the list and we electronically pass the list back and forth until we collectively meet our goal. This year we were so in to it we ended the year with more - over 2,200 items!

If you have been following my blog closely, you may have seen that for the last six years I have offered a FREE ROLL of fabric to the first person to send me a gratitude list equaling the current year.  I have not imposed a due date but have offered it simply to the first person to complete and share their list with me.  In six years, I have had two winners.  On November 16, 2010, Tania completed her list of 2,010 things she was grateful for and selected as her FREE ROLL our Solstice printed interlock.  In March 5, 2012, Tania did it again! We decided that instead of ending the giveaway, she would pass it forward. So the new rule was created - You are only eligible to receive a FREE ROLL of fabric once but you are welcome to participate in the gratitude list every year. On March 7, 2012 a new winner completed the list. Terri D. completed her list of 2,012 to be grateful for an earned 50 yards of limited release fabric.

I am offering the Gratitude Challenge again this year!  Be the first person to send me a list of 2,013 thoughtful things you are thankful for and win a FREE roll of organic cotton fabric.  The fine print:  the free roll must be chosen from my "limited release" fabrics (scroll down for list) and although the entire roll (approx. 50 yards) is FREE, the recipient is responsible for the shipping (UPS ground) charges.  You are only eligible to win this giveaway one time.

I am grateful for the people who read this blog and for any entries I may receive.

Gratitude . . . x2

For the last several years I have offered a FREE ROLL of Harmony Art organic cotton fabric to the first person to send me a gratitude list to welcome the new year.  The number of items on the list has to equal the number of the year we are entering (example the year 2012  requires 2,012 things to be grateful for).  For the second year in a row, Tania has done it!!!!

To quote the card that accompanies this beautiful book: "Once I started writing I couldn't stop.  I filled the book in about 2 weeks!  I love this practice so much.  Many many thanks! Seems to inspire those around me as well."

So, I contacted Tania and together we agreed that instead of ending the giveaway, she would pass it forward.  SOOOOO it isn't too late!!  If you want to get in on the fun . . . I suggest reading this post which goes into details about the giveaway.

Thank you Tania.  I am very grateful for you . . . and all of you who have started the gratitude challenge. . . the giveaway is still on!

Working with China? YES!

When I attended my first All Things Organic conference and trade show back in 2004, I rode the bus back to our hotel with a buyer from China.  We got to talking, he owned a natural foods store in China.  I asked him why he came all the way to Chicago to source products for his store.  Couldn't you get anything you needed in China?  I have never forgotten his response:  "They'll lie to you and tell you it is organic but it isn't."  Oh my.  That answer from a Chinese man about his own country's organics convinced me to steer clear of Chinese produced organic fabrics.

I have been approached by many "organic" fabric producers from overseas in the last 6 years.  It only takes 2 questions: "What is your organic cotton fabric certified to?" and "Who is your certifier?"  If they can't answer those basic questions I know they are clueless at best and potential frauds at worst.

Then I met Laurie and Tony from Sapphire International Ltd..  (Our meeting was one of those incredible small world experiences -- too long to go into here -- but if you are interested post a comment and I will post that story later.)  As we ate lunch at the Timber Cove Inn there was an instant connection.  Not only were they also members of the OTA, they knew about GOTS.  They had been to the same Organic Exchange (now the Textile Exchange) conference I had.  These were not phonies.  They knew their stuff.  We commiserated and collaborated, brainstormed and shared stories.  They showed me videos of their weaving facility (in China) and explained the process.

When they asked me to create an Australian animal theme towel collection for their Breganwood label of course I said YES.  Now, I must admit, I am a print designer by trade....NOT a woven designer so this was uncharted territory for me.  Add to the complexity that they were experimenting with a NEW 4 color Jacquard weaving technique and it was an uphill battle getting the design figured out.  The learning curve on this project was exceptionally steep but many emails and skype conversations later.... you can see the finished product above and below.  I think we both learned a lot.

Picture
From the moment we met, I was impressed with Laurie and Tony.  I am confident in their ethics and their commitment to true organic production.  Yep, an Australian themed organic towel, designed in California and woven in China.  It's true, textiles are indeed a global industry and there are good, honest, thoughtful people EVERYWHERE!

For your chance to win one of these cozy towels, just "like" Breganwood on facebook and then leave a comment on which Jacquard towel is your favorite before Sept. 30th.  They will also have a booth at the upcoming ABC show in KY (booth 4402).  Feel free to stop by and tell them hello if you are attending the show.
