Mark your calendar or set your PVR! Diedrea Haysel, founder of Hot Mama Gowns will be on ABC'S Reality Show "Shark Tank" April 29th at 8pm ET. Hot Mama Gowns use Harmony Art organic fabrics exclusively in their line of 100% Organic Cotton hospital maternity gowns.
Here's a link to the press release. We'll have to tune in to find out what happens on the show. I know where I will be on the last Friday night in April! This is the 15th year that the Pacific Piecemakers Quilt Guild (PPQG) has challenged its members to create quilts around a common theme. The theme this year is "Rhapsody in Hue." The show is up through May 1st at the Gualala Arts Center in Gualala, CA. There are currently 86 quilts on display! This is my entry titled: Hue Knew. It would not have been possible without the assistance, support and collaboration of Jen Madsen of Stitch Simple. THANK YOU JEN! Hue Knew . . .
Hue Knew when I designed this print that the color would shift with each print run? Hue Knew it would get lighter, then darker then lighter again? Hue Knew that the line weight would change even though the art work hadn’t? Hue Knew that you would approve a strike off and receive something else? Hue Knew India would have better quality control than South Carolina? Hue Knew that the hand of pigments and dyes were so different? Hue Knew 110” wide fabric would be such a stumbling block? Hue Knew a non-sewer could actually get a quilt designed and made? Hue Knew Jen, Carol and Marilyn would be willing to help me bring this story to life? Hue Knew Harmony Art would be so challenging and also so rewarding? Who knows what’s next? Thank YOU for participating in the Lunch Bag Freebie sponsored by our dear friends at The Green Bag Lady project! I will be contacting the winners directly by email but I thought I would post them here as well. If you are a winner and haven't heard from me yet, please email me your mailing address so we can get your winnings out to you. 1. The Grand Prize Lunch Bag Set - Michelle Bellavance 2. The Fat Quarters - Mary & Danielle Jankowski 3. Harmony Art Green Bag Lady Bags - Jessica & Stardove CONGRATULATIONS!!! I also wanted to share with you this video made by my 12 year old friend on Child Labor. Yes, you read me correctly... she is TWELVE! Note that almost all of the images of child labor are of textile plants in the USA! Yes, it is easy to think of other countries (China, Bangladesh, etc.) when you think of child labor but the fact is that here in the good ol' USA textile mills were notorious for such labor practices. Take three minutes and watch Margaux's video. I think you will find it and the images of textile mills fascinating. Note: I am happy to report that ALL Harmony Art organic fabrics are made under strict fair-trade standards (as defined by the Global Organic Textile Standards). We are committed to having our fabrics be a part of the solution, not the exploitation of people or planet.

Click the Stitch Simple link (or logo above) for a list of participants and also to link to their FREE knit tutorials. These brave souls took the challenge and are sharing their experience and tutorials with you! For those of you interested in getting in on the action you can purchase ALL of the Harmony Art knit fabrics PRE-WASHED from Stitch Simple. I look forward to getting your feedback about this experiment and your own experience with knits. ENJOY! Sus and I plan to attend the opening of Ann Savageau's project: Bags Across the Globe.
"Bags Across the Globe is an interactive project that has reached out to friends and strangers across the globe, in an effort to bring attention to the environmental damage caused by plastic shopping bags and textile waste, and to promote the use of reusable cloth bags." The main event is Sunday, January 23rd at the University of California, Davis campus. The lecture by Design Professor Savageau is from 1:30 to 2:30 at Art Annex followed by the opening reception at the Design Museum to 3:30 PM. Ann is a good friend and this is a project she has been working on since 2008. I am very excited to see the show and hear Ann speak about the project. If you are in the area, I highly recommend you come. Also in attendance will be Harmony Art's own former intern Carol Shu, another power-house to keep an eye on. Looking forward to seeing some of you there! PS HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY SUE! Thanks for all the love and support. How about starting the new year with a commitment to avoiding single-use plastic bags? The Green Bag Lady (my friend and hero) is offering 11 Harmony Art organic fabric bags in her current giveaway. All you need to do is comment on her post and then cross your fingers and let other people know her generous mission. Even if you don't win you can download the pattern for free (see link on the right hand bar of her web site) and make your own reusable fabric bag. Act quickly, you only have until tomorrow at midnight to be eligible for this giveaway.
Did you hear that Italy has banned single-use plastic bags as of 1/1/11? I think the new year is off to a fabulous start! I often tell people I have the best customers in the World. I mean it. Here's one example of just how wonderful they are. Above is a picture of how the Pure Coverz products are shipped. Each order is packaged not in plastic but in a reusable fabric bag. It's classy, it's thoughtful and it is one more example of just how lucky I am to have the privilege of working with such a great group of like-minded businesses.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration. I love that we have a holiday dedicated to being with family and friends and sharing good food all under the auspices of gratitude. It was our year to host the event and above is the table setting with my new 40 Ginkgo's tablecloth, lovingly made for me by my friend Betsi Carey. It was a great Thanksgiving in Gualala.
I definitely have much to be thankful for. High on my list are all of my wonderful, kind, thoughtful, patient and understanding customers. This journey of Harmony Art has had plenty of bumps and bruises along the way but I must say that meeting the people has been the best part! I am thankful for YOU! |
