I met Julie at an All Things Organic show in Chicago several years ago. I have been impressed with her commitment, thoughtfulness, and big heart!
Julie launched her company in 1993. In 2005, after being told by three separate doctors that she should be wearing a respirator in her studio because of the carcinogenic chemicals on conventional fabric, she started the transition to organics. In the summer of 2006 Julie lost the use of her right hand to tendinitis. Through her church's work with sponsoring Montagnard refugees, Julie met Jum and literally she became Julie's right hand. Over the years she has expanded and taught more and more refugees to sew. They have taken on production sewing for other small and thoughtful companies. The women she teaches have in many cases never used a pair of scissors so the learning curve is a steep one but Julie is committed to helping them to learn, grow, and adapt to their very different environment. (Needless to say, complex sewing is not their forte and they only take on fairly simple sewing contracts that are within the capabilities of these women.) Each project provides work for women who are otherwise unemployable and gives them the opportunity to learn new skills. Fiberactive has a waiting list of women who want work, so every job is important and personal. Fiberactive also offers prototyping, patterning and sourcing of materials. In addition, Julie saw a need for organic threads and currently produces and carries the world's only organic cotton sewing thread. Julie embodies the concept of finding a need and filling it. It's a pleasure to know her. |
